Welcome to my blog
UAL Level 3 Creative Media
Today I have learnt that the class is all assigned to make a mockumentary,
The length of the final project should be from 60 seconds to 90 seconds.
I will be working with one other person for this project.
Project concepts:
Concept 1:
The first concept is to make make a mockumentary about an aspiring music producer/artist trying his hardest to get in the industry.
Concept 2:
The second concept is to make a mockumentary about a pretentious magician trying to show off his street magic.
We decided to go for concept 1 since i believe this concept is the easiest to relate to representation.
Synopsis:
A young and upcoming music artist "MC Road" influenced by both the new generation of rappers with the lil tag and old school rappers such as DMX and Biggie gets interviewed and confronted by another egocentric individual from a different financial background. How will MC Road react?
Secondary Research:
The main idea with this mockumentary is to show cultural influences between UK music and music from the USA. A lot of people now think that UK music is becoming Americanised especially the grime scene. My aim is to show similarities between the music artists and the characters the play from the UK and US as well as showing South London culture.
The video above was the most popular mockumentary of representing artists from London until recently Big Shaq's "Mans Not Hot" became a huge internet sensation. I will use this mockumentary as the primary reference for the fundamentals of the mockumentary i plan to create. I like the character created in this mockumentary and style of it. I will most definitely try mimic that, but i am going to try create humour that is more silly and obvious than this since i do not have much time to plan out this mockumentary. I believe the sillier it is the easier and natural it would be to create.
The video above of the inbetweeners is a clear example of the different and sillier humour i want to try capture that also do not need much explaining to people that does not know anything about South London Culture because it the humour is simpler. Through my survey i learnt a lot of people do not know much about South London Culture. You will be able to find this survey somewhere below.
Since i did say that i want to showcase influences of American Artists to i researched some mumble rappers that usually gets a lot of criticism, but they do run the mainstream right now. I found one interview were Kodak Black looking like he did not how much thought shares that he thinks he is better than Tupac and Biggie. Since Tupac and Biggie are icons, Kodak Black was laughed and criticised at because of this comment. I think it would be funny to make a reference of this in my mokumentary.
I would like to also try make a funny song that i can put in the background like how most interviews for music artists puts a hit songs of the artist in the background of the interview. I am thinking to make a rushed song with vocals of me mumbling that has the same type of feel the Snoop Dogg song has above. I am not saying his song is rushed
Character research:
Over here you can see a clear example of my characters influence. Through this video, you should see how this character is being represented as an oblivious fool. You do not not for sure if the filmmaker is exploiting him, but it would not be a surprise if the filmmaker is.
Over here you can see that how unconventional shots were used for humour. A shot like is usually bad, the only time you really see it being used is when someone is trying to secretly record, and that is what is happening here. I am thinking to make a casual reference to this scene near the end of the documentary to expose my character and break the fourth wall.
Primary Research:
Survey results:
Survey Results conclusion:
Through this survey i received information of a variety of people, although i did not get the optimal amount of responses, i did receive information that i is very valuable for because i can infer how much of a understanding people outside of London has of South London Culture.
10 people made a response both to the questions asking their familiarity towards South London culture and mainstream hip-hop. The familiarity towards mainstream hip-hop is more than 50% when compared to their familiarity towards South London culture. This information is not skewed due to receiving responses from people all over the world.
This did lead me to believe i have to distinguish a clear difference between South London culture and mainstream hip-hop when making this mockumentary to make the viewing experience more accessible to a broader audience.
To achieve this i can make clear references to both mainstream hip-hop and South London culture within the mockumentary.
Moodboard:
Pre-Production:
Location Report:
Risk Assessment:
Budget:
Travel: £0
We will be mainly filming at Joe's house. This journey only requires one bus, and travelling with bus i free for both of us due to our age.
Sunglasses: £0
Both me and Joe have sunglasses we can use as a prop for the main character. This will not require a cost.
Laptop: £0
Both me and Joe also have a laptop, which can be used as a prop to mimic a music studio.
Food: £10
When filming it is important that the crew is sufficiently fed and hydrated. Therefore, both me and Joe will be buying food and water.
Total cost: £10
Script:
For the purpose of humour, it is decided most the interactions with the main character that will be filmed will come from improvisation, therefore there will be no script. I will be playing the main character and overall be directing this mokumentary due to me having the most understanding on the narrative because this concept that was decided to be followed was a concept that i have created.
This main character will be set to follow certain guidelines and a few written lines to have order with the filming.
The decided written lines are:
"I am better than Tupac and Biggie, no biggie"
"Today we will be interviewing MC Road"
"Do not ever disrespect me again in my show"
"I am the interviewer"
