UAL Level 3 Creative Media
Today Fliss let us know that we have to make a teaser trailer and it obviously has to relate strongly to a specific genre. The trailer should showcase the genre.
Our group excluding Frederica gathered - since she was not in - gathered together to discuss what the genre should be.
Angus straight away presented an idea that he categorises in the action genre. The idea for his teaser trailer is to have a character that is shown to be trapped outside in the park by walls and beyond those walls are some titans. I was alright with the idea until the walls and titans were introduced because it seemed to be a rip off of a mainstream anime and it seemed over ambitious. I brought up this worry and Angus reassured me saying we would not be showing any titans or walls when film, we would only be filming himself in a park showing it can be better.
We were getting to ahead of ourselves and talking more in depth about what specific genres and instead tunnel visioned into one idea. Therefore I purposed we wait until Frederica is with us before we make a finalised decision and right now to decide what genre each one us want to personally showcase for the teaser trailer.
I personally want to create a light hearted comedy trailer or a straight gritty drama trailer. Right now I am leaning more towards a comedy. I want to try mimc a traditional Hollywood comedy camera with a little more original plot. This even can allow me to integrate a little drama into it. What movies come to mind right now is Forrest Gump, a classic Edgar Wright movie or even Groundhog Day.
If I am to make a gritty drama trailer I am thinking to make a traditional the youth of London getting into trouble trailer. The show Top Boy comes to mind.
Planning
Today I have changed groups. The new group consists of Preya, Sanchia, Miles and Joe. They added me to the loop on what the their general plan is. At first they were thinking drama and I thought they made the traditional gritty uk drama, but they quickly reassured me they are thinking more of a mystery drama. After a quick brain storm of ideas we decided to have the main theme of mental illness for the trailer and like I said before I see a lot of other film students try tackle mental illness, which makes watching or making one boring to me. The group reassured me and said they want to take a more unique approach.
Concepts:
We came up of three concepts:
Our first concept was to have a character that had dissociative personality disorder to go on a job interview and show different character of himself. It was said that he would seem normal until some stages of the interview and then we narrate the voices in his head. This concept was mainly created Preya.
Our second concept was to have a romantic date situation to find out the guy had dissociative personality disorder or for the women to be crazy. If we were to stuck with the man having the mental illness the women was to be a someone that wanted to find out more about the man and investigate. This concept was created by all of us coming together and discussing on scenarios.
Our third concept was to make a teaser trailer that primary focus on someone with OCD and this person struggling with this. I thought this was a nice idea because we could integrate what I said early into the discussion: to use quick repetitive desaturated shots of something so regular such as filling up a water bottle to simply show a repetitive lifestyle until a change. For this trailer we can use those shots to focus on showing how OCD works maybe. I see the quick shots to be done like how it was done in requiem for a dream. I will link the video below. This concept was mainly created by Sanchia.
Synopsis:
A young man with OCD demonstrates his struggles with everyday life with how such casual things can have a big impact on him due to his disorder.
We discussed what we are researching and what of the pre-production we are doing. Preya recorded everything we discussed regarding the research and pre-production and sent a email:
Secondary Research:
As you can see from above i am assigned to research a trailer from a movie of the romance genre. I watched a movie very recently of the romantic genre with the main character having OCD. This is probably a very famous movie because of the cast and rating it has. It was an another good film Jack Nicholson starred in.
Poster:
Above you can see the poster of As Good As It Gets. At first glance to me personally this poster looks like a film for a something like a romantic comedy mainly because of the light baby like colours used. The two primary colours i can see is light blue and light pink and these two blending together gives off a romantic comedy feel to the poster. I do not mean the traditional Hollywood style of romantic comedy, but of more of two separate genres coming together. You can tell this is a early romantic comedy movie. The low contrast, grain and the old school fonts is a dead giveaway that this is a old movie.
The main subject in the poster is Jack Nicholson looking upwards smiling. This works well with the title because when we do ask ourselves why he is looking upwards smiling and think he must be feeling positive then read the title which after makes sense when linked to the main subject. Since Jack Nicholson is the only subject, the poster is seen as pretty minimalistic. This is perfectly fine because at the time of making this film Jack Nicholson is already seen as a loved icon. Therefore it is very smart to make him the only thing you can look at when taking a glance because it gives so much publicity to the film. The smile itself is great because it looks playful and when its pieced together with everything else it looks like it belongs in a comedy.
The film itself is funny, but it is not straight out comedy: there is a romantic story that we need to follow through. The comedy mainly only comes from the main character's shown misanthropy, which then transforms into comedy from more of his reactions to unfamiliar circumstances when he puts a effort to capture both his cure and love: a nice women.
Trailer:
This trailer is classic old school. The narration over the chosen clips as well as the actual dialogue from the film relating to the previous dialogue shown. Straight away we are given a lot of information on the main character through his choice of responses when talking with other characters or in a more of a direct way when he exclaimed he has OCD. Half way through the trailer there is a change because the trailer wants to show the same change that was shown in the movie of the main character changing due to finding someone he likes as a human being.
What can be integrated to from this trailer to our trailer is using narration and the whole narrative aspect of using specific sequence of shots and dialogue to create a story within the trailer. I believe this to be a great idea because of being limited by time to collect footage we need to make the trailer. We have one week.
If we are to try create a traditional trailer we will need to film a lot of footage and have a variety of locations ready for filming to show a change in scenery and more. Using narration can mask a lot of issues that can occur.
OCD Research
After doing some of my own personal research about OCD i have gained a general understanding of this disorder.
OCD stands for Obsessive-compulsive disorder and like name suggests this is a mental disorder that causes the person with this disorder to constantly obsess about a variety of things such as certain thoughts this person may be having.
This disorder generally does cause people to have their own set routines that they strictly follow for example i am guessing many have seen characters with OCD in TV that separates their food when they eat.
I am also guessing most have heard about the story of the girl that continuously washes her hands with soap until all the soap get used up or she bleeds. OCD is also generally seen as an anxiety based disorder which makes the person really question themselves like have they really cleaned themselves properly or if they did it wrong. There is a renowned psychologist called Jordan Peterson that i found online that argues that he believes OCD is based on disgust and this shows there is a little blur on what type of based disorder OCD is.
OCD develops often around puberty, but it typically develops during early adulthood. OCD can develop at any age and i will link a video i found online showing a young boy with OCD and his mom trying to help control the disorder, having his future in mind.
Sanchia Charles' (Group member) OCD Medication Research:
Through Therapy you may be given an additional method of treatment which would revolve around certain medication in which you can take, which could help lower the symptoms of OCD – and this would be given to you depending on whether your psychological therapy (CBT) is effective towards your process and also if your OCD gets worse.
The medications in which people are given in order to aid this disorder, consists of selective serotonin reuptakes inhibitors also known as (SSRIS). OCD is known to occur because of people having a chemical balance in their brain, that they lack which is serotonin, a nerve cell which helps to regulate anxiety and reduce depression. This medication helps to increase those levels of serotonin in which people lack, and this would lower the symptoms of OCD. Unfortunately this medication does not work straight away, thus resulting in people having to wait at least 12 weeks for the effects to kick in and take place.
When taking this medication there is said to be a range of side effects many takers tend to notice, once taking an SSRI for the first time.
The side effects consist of:
-
Headaches
-
Sleeping Problems (insomnia)
-
Feeling or being sick
-
Low sex drive
-
Dizziness
-
Feeling agitated, shaky or anxious
In rare cases people who have taken this medication have even said to have suicidal thoughts, thoughts of wanting to harm them self, and this could occur even if originally you have never had those thoughts before.
If this is the case, further action would have to be enforced and you would have to go to A&E depending on the extremeness of your thoughts.

Myles Wilkinson's (Group member) Comedy research:
Juno:
When precocious teen Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page) becomes pregnant, she chooses a failed rock star and his wife (Jennifer Garner) to adopt her unborn child. Complications occur when Mark, the prospective father, begins viewing Juno as more than just the mother of his future child, putting both his marriage and the adoption in jeopardy.
Looking at the trailer for Juno straight away you are introduced to the main character and also the dilemma they are in. When it comes to dialogue the first piece consist of Juno taking a pregnancy test and then making a jock as she finds out she is pregnant "there it is that little pink plus sign is so un holly". straight away the store owner interacts with her saying "that is no exer sketch this is one doodle that can’t be undone". from the dialogue alone, you can tell that this move is full of funny one-line jocks and a lot of humour. Another thing that lets you know that it is a comedy is the music it is nothing serious that you would find in an action movie or something with like violins that you would find in a heart breaking or romance movie. One more thing that made it seem like it was a comedy was the way the sponsors pop up for example the fox sponsor pops op on the pregnancy test which I personally find funny.
Best in show:
The tension is palpable, the excitement is mounting, and the heady scent of competition is in the air as hundreds of eager contestants from across America prepare to take part in what is undoubtedly one of the greatest events of their lives -- the Mayflower Dog Show. The canine contestants and their owners are as wondrously diverse as the great country that has bred them.
My first impressions when looking at the trailer for best in show you are introduced to the narrative and the characters. The thing about this trailer is that when introducing all the different contestants you can straight way see how goofy they are for example the swan family you see them talking to a psychiatrist when you hear them talking you would think they would be talking a chilled or something but now they were actual talking about their dog, also in that scene the choice of dialogue was very good as straight away you would think they are talking about a chilled but once the camera is on the dog you can’t help but laugh at how dumb it is.
Anchorman 2 The Legend of Ron Burgundy:
Seven years after capturing the heart of co-anchor Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), newsman Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) is offered the chance of a lifetime: a spot on the world's first 24-hour global cable news network. Ron quickly assembles his team: Champ Kind (David Koechner), Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd) and Brick Tamland (Steve Carell). Challenged by his tough female boss, a network owner and a popular anchor, Ron and his pals must find their own way to the top of the ratings.
My first impressions when watch the anchor-man trailer is straight away I know that it is a comedy the way it opens with a narrator and even the lines that the actors say. in the first scene of the trailer they are walking in slow-motion which gives it a funny aspect. Also, the dialogue for example Ron says, "I was put on this earth to do one thing have excellent quality hear and read the news". Just this line alone makes me know that it is a comedy.
OCD treatments (from Miles Wilkinson):
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is indeed a chronic, but equally a very treatable, medical condition.
cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
The treatment found to be the most effective in successfully treating OCD is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). In many cases, CBT alone is highly effective in treating OCD, but for some people a combination of CBT and medication is also effective. Medication may reduce the anxiety enough for a person to start, and eventually succeed in therapy.
However, what we know is that left unchecked and untreated OCD will mushroom and feed upon itself and can have the power to consume if left unchallenged. It is therefore important to seek professional medical advice and support the moment someone recognises OCD type symptoms.
Exposure and response prevention (ERP)
ERP is a type of CBT that is recommended for treating OCD. ERP works by helping you confront your obsessions and resist the urge to carry out compulsions.
During ERP your therapist will support you to deliberately put yourself in a situation that would usually make you feel anxious. Instead of performing your usual compulsion you will be encouraged to try and tolerate the anxiety. Your therapist may even suggest that you do something that makes you feel even more anxious.
ERP helps you to see that the uncomfortable feelings will eventually go away even if you don't perform a compulsion. As ERP continues people find that their obsessions cause them less anxiety and the anxiety they do feel goes away faster. They feel less need to do compulsions. This is called habituation.
You would always start by confronting situations you find easy and building up slowly to more difficult situations.
Joseph Buckmaster's Sci Fi Research :
Sci-fi Genre
As part of our genre research, me and my group members chose a specific genre to study in order to gain more knowledge on the basic conventions of a selected genre. I chose to research into the genre of science fiction as it is one of my preferred genres.
Films of the sci-fi genre juggle the imaginative concepts that range from advanced technology to time travel. Sci-fi films usually explore the consequences of scientific innovations and the effects that they have on humanity. Through the use of CGI and off world plots, directors seek to introduce the audience to a world in which they have envisioned. The universes that directors comprise aren't always positive.
Sci-fi as a genre can be merged with other genres such as horror or mystery to create hybrid genres. A popular hybrid genre is sci-fi horror and instances of where these two genres have been combined can be seen in the likes of past films such as Alien (1979) and The Thing (1981). Sci-fi films are often blurred or merged with horror films with the introduction of alien lifeforms or rampant technology typically in a claustrophobic setting to help make the protagonist look isolated.
Key Conventions of the Sci-Fi genre
Each genre has specific conventions which help to differentiate them from one another. The typical conventions of sci-fi films are as follows:
. Heavy usage of CGI animations
. Other world settings/alternate universes
. Typical narrative of good vs evil
. Futuristic props (usually reflective of film plot)
. Narrative elements such as time travel, advanced technology etc.
Existing sci-fi film trailer analysis
Bladerunner 2049 is the sequel to the sci-fi cult film Bladerunner, which was influential in creating the foundations of the sci-fi genre. Bladerunner 2049 uses a few of the typical conventions of the sci-fi genre to help make it more identifiable. The first convention of which is prominently used by Bladerunner 2049 is the usage of CGI to help create futuristic elements in the trailer. Directors use a lot of CGI in sci-fi films to introduce the audience to a world that they have created. The opening scenes consists of a fade from black, which is used to help create suspense. To further support the suspense, synth music with an eery tone plays in the background. Throughout the start of the trailer there are moments of which the music becomes increasingly loud to help add power to the scenes.
Bladerunner 2049 deals with the presentation of advanced technology differently from other films. The director of the film uses the narrative of Bladerunner to explore different concepts of the future. With the introduction of Joi, a holographic AI which adapts its behaviour based on what its owner wants, Ridley Scott introduces the audience to a world in which artificial intelligence can fulfil the lonely needs of humans. This is another convention that Bladerunner follows through its narrative as it envisions a future in which technology can compensate for another human existence.
Convention: Narrative
The narrative of Bladerunner 2049 is well suited to that of a sci-fi film. According to Rotten Tomatoes the plot of Bladerunner is as follows; "Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years." The narrative of Bladerunner is mainly built-up on the foundations of the previous film and relies heavily on the nostalgia factor to help drive its narrative. Bladerunner's narrative is supported and enhanced by the usage of CGI.
Bladerunner 2049 deals with the portrayal of good vs bad differently. A structure of evil vs good helps to lay the foundations for many sci-fi films of the past such as Star Wars and The Matrix. From the trailer of Bladerunner, the line between good vs bad is blurred. With the introduction of multiple characters, the audience is unable to determine which of them are good. Bladerunner also includes other narrative elements that are typical to that of the sci-fi genre.
Convention: High-tech setting
The usage of CGI to create sci-fi landscapes such as these are used frequently in order to help maintain a dystopian tone throughout Bladerunner 2049. The CGI constructed landscapes are mainly shown from wide shots to help connote isolation but to also act as a reminder for the bleak dystopian landscape of which the film is set. Another convention of sci-fi films is a variety of locations. Blader
Josephs OCD Research:
OCD by definition is known as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. According to the NHS website people can develop OCD from a young age, particularly around puberty. OCD prominently develops around early adulthood and causes obsessions and compulsions that can severely affect people in their everyday lives. The majority of people will have obsessive thoughts or compulsive behaviours at some stage and people label it as having some "OCD". OCD is best diagnosed when obsessive thoughts and compulsive actions begin to inhibit someone from carry out important activities.
Being "obsessed" and "obsessing over something" are commonly used within everyday language and some people who suffer badly from OCD may feel as if it is lessening the impact that obsessive compulsive disorder has on their lives. OCD affects as many as 12 in every 1000 people and it's ranked by the World Health Organisation as one of the top ten most disabling illnesses of any kind. The actual effects of OCD stretch further than the common belief of washing your hands or repeatedly flipping light switches on and off. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder manifests itself in the forms of uncontrollable thoughts, impulses, worries and fears which can seriously impair someone in their day to day life.
Sufferers of OCD are not always aware of what is restricting them. Shockingly, the average time of which a sufferer of OCD spends developing symptoms to receiving treatment is 10-15 years. This is due to the fact that there is a lack of understanding for the ways in which OCD affects people partly by the individual sufferer and health professionals. Symptoms of OCD usually become more prominent during moments which are more stressful than other. These can include; work, university or relationships. These different stresses affect individuals differently, with certain people being more affected by one over the over.

I was instructed to make an easy doable script that related with the concept we all decided on, however after showing the script the group decided to actually write another script since the two i made seemed hard. I made two because i was getting mixed emails saying to focus one thing then got another email saying to focus another.
Sanchia wrote a new one that everyone was happy with and the actors acted out parts at that current day. 18th of October 2017:
