Showreels:

While watching this showreel I felt like a lot of the persons likes and influences are shown. Firstly because of the music he choose being atmospheric like how a lot of music are on showreels, but it does not sound like a traditional royal free audio you find. It sounds like something the editor actually would like and uses as influence for his films. The person further wanting to show his influences and style is shown with the creative choices he makes with using black and white, gloomy colouring with contrasts of more saturated and more neutral colouring. The end product gives off an artistic feel and look.0

What stood out to me most about this showreel compared to the others I selected is the music used. The music defined the pace of this showreel and made it feel a lot more cohesive. It felt nice to watch because the editor did not try force anything, he just edited to the beat and allowed the music to carry his shots.

This is definitely the showreel enjoyed the most. Therefore will be using what i liked most from this show reel into my own such as allowing the music to flow with the edits of me showcasing my skills.

Voiceovers are used in this showreel to carry it just like how music was used in the previous showreel. Although it may come across as more lazy, you will gain a lot more freedom on what direction you want to take you showreel and the order you want to add your scenes. If I am to add a voice over I will definitely put a lot of effort in to avoid it making it cheesy and avoid using a traditional dramatic music in the background.

After my tutor told me too look up showreels and research them, I thought back to the last showreel I saw, which was from the person I rented audio equipment from. After I have a look at his again I will look at a few other show reels to compare

Planning for showreel

I do want take elements i liked the most and seem most versatile of each showreel and add it on to mine. The plan is to select the favorites of what i shot and to order them in a sequence where they make sense together. I would have in my mind that i am ultimately advertising myself, so i need to make sure the footage i select highlights my skills and i will want to select my honest work as in the ones that i appreciate the most and had the most influence over.

I can not select my favorite work and cherry pick my most honest work right now since i do not have much work that i have to show. There only around 30 seconds of footage i believe that i want to use from the work i done from college last year. Therefore i will have to produce more work outside of college and take advantage of my next 5 mini projects and make stuff that i can put in my showreel.

After i decide what i want to use for my showreel, i will have to have what type of music i would want to be playing in mind and how it will be used if there is dialogue. The plan will be to find a suitable song and try tailor it to my showreel. I have been trying to learn how to use the DAW "FL Studio" on my own time. Therefore i may try to use the skills i learnt to tailor a preselected song to let it sync with my showreel or get ambitious and try to make some music of my own specifically for my showreel.

How i would use dialogue from things i have shot is maybe try add narration in, in a way that seems a lot more natural rather than a traditional way like the 3rd showreel. In my head i see the narration going in and out with the dialogue and synergies with it rather than being distracting.

The more I watch showreels the more I realise footage selection and music selection is a skill. Those seem to be the foundation on making a good showreel. This showreel showed that. You must your show your skills with the footage your select and show who you are and what you are about and usually the music is just used to let the sequence of footage shown to flow into each other, however this person also highlighted another persons skill in sound design with this showreel rather than just pick a royalty free song. This showed good collaboration work.

Music:

My tutor recommended a site called: https://www.bensound.com. We was told this is the site she used to get music for her own showreel and everything here is royalty free. We have permission to use this music. There is a vast amount of music in this site. Therefore there is definitely high possibility that i use something from this site.

Showreel:

As i do not have much work i consider of good quality, it was difficult for me to find enough footage i can put in, which made me use footage for longer then needed.

The feedback i got was to remove the music and to shorten the footage i choice to put in.

The feedback i completely do agree with.
